A BRIEF HISTORY OF VOGUE

A lot of people are trying to follow all fashion trends. But who sets these trends? One really influential medium is the fashion magazine. Especially in the times there was no internet or television. This is why fashion magazines have such an important role in the history of fashion.

Here’s a brief history of one of the best known fashion magazines in the world: Vogue.

It all started in the United States of America in 1892 when Arthur Turnure founded Vogue. Back then Vogue was a lifestyle magazine for the new elite in New York. 13 years later Condé Nast bought Vogue and started European versions of the magazine. Now Vogue was becoming a well known fashion magazine. After this the number of subscribers kept growing. In the 1960s something special was happening in fashion, a lot of fashion traditions were broken and Diana Vreeland brought this revolution to Vogue magazine. This made Vogue a lot more appealing to the youth. Another decade later Grace Mirabella gave Vogue a real facelift, she made the style of Vogue respond to the 1970s. In the meantime the circulation of Vogue kept increasing. In 1988 Anna Wintour became editor-in-chief of Vogue and she brought Vogue to where the magazine stands today. She putted celebrities on the cover and made Vogue more approachable. Now Anna Wintour is one of the most influential persons in the fashion world.

What you’re wearing now is probably selected for you by Anna Wintour and Vogue.
